The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced a major recruitment drive, inviting applications for a broad range of positions across its Engineering, Marine, Medical and Administrative departments.

The expansive advert on My Gov on November 25, 2025, signals the authority’s push to strengthen institutional capacity as it works to position the Port of Mombasa as a competitive regional hub.

KPA, which manages and regulates sea and inland waterway ports across Kenya, said the new vacancies are aimed at boosting efficiency, enhancing operational reliability and supporting its long-term strategic goals.

The Port of Mombasa currently connects directly to more than 80 global ports and serves a vast hinterland that includes Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia.

Among the newly announced positions are Artisans, Technicians, Assistant Ferry Masters, Coxswains II, Seamen (Tug Mates), Mooring Assistants, Laboratory Technologists, Pharmaceutical Technologists, Pharmacy Attendants, Graduate Trainees and Administrative Assistants. The roles span several grades, with most positions offered under pensionable terms of service.

Engineering and infrastructure positions

KPA is seeking Artisans in Mechanical, Electrical, Painting, Carpentry, Joinery, Aluminium and Masonry. Duties include assisting senior artisans in daily safety checks, planned and breakdown maintenance, housekeeping, equipment cleaning, fabrication and materials handling.

Applicants must have a KCSE certificate, Government Trade Test III or equivalent, computer proficiency, seafarer training or discharge book where necessary, and meet Chapter Six requirements. Candidates must also be aged 30 years or below. 

Technician positions—covering Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Projects, Instrumentation & Control and Shift operations—require a KCSE certificate, a diploma in relevant engineering fields, computer proficiency and compliance with Chapter Six. Technicians will assist senior staff in maintenance, safety checks, inspections, emergency repairs, reporting, power distribution and equipment monitoring.

Marine operations vacancies

Marine roles include Assistant Ferry Masters, charged with commanding vessels, ensuring crew and passenger safety, updating ship logs, responding to distress calls, supervising berthing operations and enforcing marine safety protocols.

Minimum qualifications include a KCSE certificate, diploma in Nautical Studies, at least four years’ relevant experience, a Master Port Operations Certificate of Competency, GMDSS Radio Certificate, safety training and a valid medical certificate.

Additional marine posts include Coxswain II, Seamen (Tug Mates) and Mooring Assistants, all tasked with supporting harbour craft operations, mooring, bunkering and safe movement of vessels.

Medical services and administrative positions

The authority is also hiring Laboratory Technologists, Pharmaceutical Technologists and Pharmacy Attendants. Responsibilities range from laboratory analysis, sterilization, dispensing, counselling, inventory management and enforcing health safety protocols.

Administrative roles include graduate trainees—open to young graduates under 30 with degrees in social sciences, finance, engineering, ICT or related fields—and Administrative Assistants, requiring a diploma in business, finance, ICT, HR or similar disciplines.

Remuneration

The roles come with structured salary ranges:

Artisans (KPA9): Ksh 67,317–85,554 basic pay

Technicians (KPA8): Ksh 76,156–108,767

Assistant Ferry Masters (KPA7): Ksh 100,660–132,290

Coxswain II (KPA8): Ksh 76,156–108,767

Pharmacy Attendant (KPA9): Ksh 67,317–85,554

Laboratory/Pharmaceutical Technologists (KPA7): Ksh 100,660–132,290

All positions also include house allowance and motor transport allowance.
