Gospel singer Betty Bayo has succumbed to blood cancer on Monday 10th November. Her relationship with Pastor Victor Kanyari was somewhat complicated and their story was never a straight line, but in its twists lived the truth of two people bound by love, loss and the children who outlived the headlines.
1. Beginnings
Betty Bayo, a gospel musician known for her hit “Eleventh Hour,” and Pastor Victor Kanyari, a televangelist with a sizeable following, entered into a relationship that would draw public fascination and scrutiny.
According to Kanyari, he fulfilled cultural formalities visiting her parents, paying a dowry before fathering two children with Betty.
However, Betty later claimed the relationship never culminated in a formal marriage. She stated: “I am not a divorcee … I was never married” in reference to Kanyari.

From the outset, a central tension lay in how each described the union. Betty insisted that her first real marriage was with her partnerHiram, emphasising that her past with Kanyari did not equate to a formal marital bond.
On the other hand, Kanyari remained firm in his view: he considered their relationship legitimate and claimed that he would “never have children with someone I am not married to.”
This divergence set the stage for years of public commentary, speculation and ambiguous statements.
The relationship’s collapse was intertwined with controversy. The pastor became embroiled in a scandal involving an expose of so-called “miracles,” and Betty reflected that in her marriage with him “emotions died” and that the celebrity-life pressure added strain.
In 2020, Betty described herself as being “insulted” after the expose, noting “the public wanted me to answer as a wife but the person I was speaking about was not even in my life.”

4. Moving On & Reunions
Over time, Betty moved on and entered a new union. Her messaging in 2024 underscored this: after Kanyari publicly prayed for the possibility of their reunion, Betty responded with a caption: “For those trusting God for a permanent marriage partner. May God give you a prayer partner, not a prayer item.”
This post made clear her intention not to revisit the past relationship.
In September 2024, Kanyari and Betty’s partner Hiram Gitau, aka “Tosh” met for the first time in a cordial, highly publicised encounter facilitated by Betty’s eldest daughter.
The meeting was described as warm, with Kanyari stating: “For the first time we meet… I have never seen you face to face.”
5. Reflections & Surprising Confessions
In a candid moment published in 2025, Betty revealed one of the things that initially attracted her to Kanyari: his teeth. She said she fell for him because of that.
This lighthearted admission offered a glimpse into the human side of their relationship amid all the public drama.
6. Co-Parenting & Legacy
Despite their personal storm, both have made efforts to maintain their children’s well-being. Kanyari has publicly affirmed his commitment: he claimed to pay significant school fees and to remain present in their children’s lives.
Betty, for her part, has spoken of healing, learning from the experience and striving for healthier outcomes in her relationship.
Here is the timeline of their relationship.
