Protest reported along Jogoo Road./SCREENGRABPolice have issued an urgent advisory to motorists and pedestrians to avoid Jogoo Road after reports emerged of a large crowd marching toward the Central Business District, throwing stones at vehicles, and allegedly robbing passengers.
Police have urged members of the public to avoid the area: if possible, refrain from traveling through this area until the situation is resolved.
The usually busy Jogoo Road has been rendered impassable today as Makongeni residents staged a protest against planned evictions, setting bonfires on the highway and trapping motorists in a volatile confrontation.
In graphic scenes circulating online, flames roared in the middle of the road, smoke and chaos blocking passage for vehicles. Protesters—many from the Makongeni estate—demanded an immediate halt to eviction plans tied to a city-led affordable housing project.
The Sikika Road Safety, an online road safety campaign team, issued a warning: “Some young people were taking advantage of the protests and robbing motorists stuck in traffic near City Stadium.”

The Makongeni residents say they have long been uneasy about eviction proposals tied to the city’s housing plans.
On July 2, they had already rallied against abrupt counting exercises, claiming the enumeration of homes was done without prior notice or community consultation.
