The world is mourning the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a towering figure in African politics and a lifelong champion for democracy, unity, and justice.
Messages of condolence have poured in from across the globe as leaders honour his immense contribution to Kenya and the African continent.
Leaders Express Their Condolences
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, visiting Raila Odinga’s home in Karen to personally convey his condolences to the Odinga family.
The Head of State expressed deep sorrow over the passing of a man he described as a patriot and statesman who shaped Kenya’s democratic journey for decades.
Leaders from neighbouring African nations have also paid tribute to the late Odinga, highlighting his lasting influence on regional peace, Pan-Africanism, and democracy.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) expressed his condolences in a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter):
“Saddened to hear of the passing of former PM @RailaOdinga. We extend our deepest condolences to the people of Kenya, the Odinga family, President @WilliamsRuto, and all those touched by this towering advocate for democracy. His legacy will endure. May he rest in eternal peace.”
From Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also shared a statement of solidarity with Kenya:
“On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, I extend my sincere condolences on the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga. May he rest in peace.”
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her sadness in a moving Swahili tribute, calling Raila Odinga a “mwanamajumui wa Afrika” — a true Pan-Africanist.
“Nimepokea kwa masikitiko makubwa taarifa ya kifo cha Mheshimiwa Raila Amolo Odinga. Tumempoteza kiongozi mahiri, mpenda amani na mtafuta suluhu, ambaye ushawishi na upendo wake haukuwa tu ndani ya Kenya, bali Afrika Mashariki na Afrika kwa ujumla.”
Tributes From Beyond Africa
Condolences have also flowed from international leaders beyond Africa, reflecting Odinga’s global stature.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Raila as a “cherished friend of India,” recalling their long friendship that began during his time as Gujarat’s Chief Minister.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga. He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India,” Modi said.
“He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter’s health.”

Modi added that Raila’s efforts in strengthening India–Kenya relations would forever be remembered.
Uhuru Kenyatta’s Emotional Tribute
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, under whose government Raila served as Africa’s Infrastructure Envoy, released a deeply emotional statement mourning the loss of his longtime political ally and friend.
“My heart is heavy, and my spirit is burdened with a grief that is both profound and deeply personal. The news of Raila’s passing has left a silence that echoes across our nation — a silence where once there was a voice of thunder and conviction.”
Uhuru described Raila as a man of courage, resilience, and unmatched dedication to the pursuit of democracy, justice, and equality for all Kenyans.

Raila Odinga’s political career spanned more than four decades. He played a pivotal role in Kenya’s multi-party democracy, constitutional reform, and Pan-African unity. His legacy, leaders agree, will continue to inspire generations across Africa.
