Every year on 15 October, the world focuses on a remarkably simple act of health protection: washing hands with soap.

This annual observation is known as Global Handwashing Day (GHD). It serves as a dedicated global advocacy day.

GHD advocates for handwashing with soap because it is an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and ultimately save lives.

The Story Behind the Day

Global Handwashing Day was established by the Global Handwashing Partnership. The first event took place in 2008.

That year, over 120 million children across more than 70 countries participated in washing their hands with soap.

Since its founding, GHD has become an opportunity to create and replicate imaginative methods to encourage people to wash their hands at crucial times.

Community and national leaders use the day to spread the essential message about clean hands. They also build new facilities, such as sinks and ‘tippy taps’.

The event is now endorsed by many groups, including governments, schools, civil society organizations, and private companies. The 2025 theme for the day makes a bold statement: Clean hands save lives!

Learning the Proper Technique

Washing hands with soap and clean, running water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stop germs from spreading and to stay healthy.

It is inexpensive and can significantly reduce the number of young children who fall ill.

To make handwashing a healthy habit, people must learn the correct technique. There are five essential steps to follow every time.

First, you must wet your hands with clean, running water, then apply soap. Next, lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap.

Make sure to lather the backs of your hands, under your nails, and between your fingers.

The third step is to scrub your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds. If you need a timer, you can hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice from beginning to end. Then, rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Finally, dry your hands using a clean towel or allow them to air dry.

Parents and educators are encouraged to lead by example to help children develop this vital habit.

The Health Benefits Are Clear

Teaching people about handwashing helps entire communities remain healthy. Many germs that cause illness spread when hands are not washed properly, especially at key times.

These critical times include after using the toilet, before preparing food, and after coughing or sneezing. Studies have shown that handwashing education leads to substantial health improvements.

Key statistics highlight the impact of this simple action:

• Handwashing can reduce the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by about 23%–40%.

• It can reduce respiratory illnesses, such as colds, in the general population by about 16%–21%.

• It is estimated that handwashing can prevent one in three diarrhea-related sicknesses and one in five respiratory infections.

Clean hands are a "germ-fighting superpower," especially for children. By making handwashing a lifelong habit, we keep ourselves and our families healthy.

If soap and water are not readily available, a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol should be used.
