The County Government of Kakamega has announced the recruitment of 3,000 service men and women to join the County Youth Service and Women Empowerment Programme.
The move aims to engage young people and women in economically viable ventures, boosting employment and community development.
In a notice, the county invited applications from qualified candidates to fill the positions.
The recruitment is grounded in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 (Article 55), the County Governments Act No. 17 of 2012, and the Kakamega County Youth and Women Service Act No. 5 of 2019.
The programme will focus on activities such as road maintenance, environmental sanitation and hygiene, cleaning of market centres, bush clearing, sentry services, drainage system maintenance, and office support services.
Successful applicants will report directly to the Director of the County Youth Service and Women Empowerment Programme.
To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18-35 years for youth and 35-55 years for women, residents of specified community areas in Kakamega County, and in good medical condition.
Candidates must also be physically fit to undertake the required tasks and pass an aptitude test.
Paramilitary training will be mandatory, alongside a commitment to attend training sessions at county polytechnics twice weekly.
Applicants are required to pick application forms from their respective ward administrators’ offices, complete them, and return the forms before the deadline of October 10, 2025.
Original identification documents and a certificate of good conduct will be necessary for successful candidates. The county encourages persons with disabilities to apply, emphasising inclusivity.
The notice also warned that any form of canvassing will lead to automatic disqualification.
“All successful candidates will be required to submit their original documents,” the notice said.
Successful recruits will receive a monthly stipend as part of the empowerment programme.
“Beneficiaries of the programme will be paid a monthly stipend. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Canvassing will lead to automatic disqualification,” the notice added.
The recruitment drive follows closely on the heels of another major hiring initiative by Kakamega County, which recently advertised 277 job vacancies across various departments.
The County Public Service Board indicated that this move, led by Governor Fernandes Barasa’s administration, is part of efforts to fill critical gaps in service delivery.
The listed opportunities are in three departments: the Department of Health Services, the Department of Social Services, Youth, Sports, gender, and Culture, and the Department of Public Service and County Administration.
The Department of Health accounted for the majority of those vacancies, with 270 positions available in public health facilities.
Candidates for this recruitment were required to submit their applications online via the county website by October 10, 2025, at 11:59 pm.
