Veteran radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has opened up about an unusual chapter in his life, revealing that he once dated a Mzungu woman while working in Germany.
Speaking during an interview with comedian Dr Ofweneke, Mwakideu disclosed that the relationship was the shortest he has ever had.
“I have dated a Mzungu, and that was the shortest relationship of my life. It was around 2008, when I was working at Deutsche Welle in Germany. I met a lady who was a soldier,” he recalled.
Why Mwakideu Struggled Dating a Mzungu
When asked if he would ever consider dating a Mzungu again, the broadcaster admitted he would not, arguing that cultural differences made the relationship difficult.
“Niliona tu siwezi na wazungu, bro. Wazungu wana mambo mingi. If you’re an African child raised in an African way, you can’t date a Mzungu. Even someone like you (referring to Dr Ofweneke) wouldn’t manage,” he said.
He went on to share advice for those who might try: “You must be extremely humble and obedient. You have to accept everything and be a ‘yes sir’ person. Even your social life has to change completely.”

Why the Relationship Ended
Mwakideu revealed that the short-lived romance collapsed when the German woman visited him in Kenya. According to him, she became upset with his social lifestyle and interactions with female friends.
“She complained about me hugging female friends. On the third day, she walked out of the club in protest. She ended up moving to a guesthouse for the rest of her stay,” he explained.
Despite trying to reassure her that his friendliness was part of his job as a radio presenter, the woman decided to end things just three days into her three-week trip.
“That’s how the story ended. I had to let her go,” he said.

Finding Love at Home
Away from the brief foreign fling, Mwakideu also shared how he eventually met and married his wife, Mariamu Mwemba.
He first encountered Mariamu back in 2006, while still dating someone else at the Coast. “Mariamu alinisumbua kweli! I pursued her since 2006… she would tell me I had not settled,” he said in an interview with Churchill.
His persistence paid off years later after he moved to Nairobi. “I had a girlfriend but was still charming her. When I came to Nairobi I told her I did not have a girlfriend, and she accepted me,” he said with a smile.

The couple tied the knot in 2014, and Mwakideu has publicly vowed never to leave her. “We did a wedding in 2014. I told her in front of a church that I am not leaving her.”
Birthday Tribute from His Wife
In December 2021, when Mwakideu turned 40, Mariamu penned a heartfelt message to celebrate him.
“You took my breath away when we first met, and today you still leave me breathless every day! Husband, I want you to know that I love you with all my heart. You have made every step of our journey together a wonderful experience. Happy birthday my love ??,” she wrote.
