Before she graced the stage with a sash and crown, Nancy Njeri, the new Miss Kenya USA 2024, had a very different kind of job.
In a Quickfire Session with journalist Kalondu Musyimi of Mpasho, the newly crowned beauty queen revealed that her first job was at a restaurant.
“I earned about $7.50 an hour,” she stated, a wage thatis approximately KES 975. This humble beginning is a story that feels instantly familiar to thousands of young people who juggle shifts while dreaming of bigger stages.

Nancy’s journey is a powerful example that small starts do not define a person’s finish line.
Her rise mirrors the hustle of young people who balance work, studies, and side gigs while chasing their passion projects.

A Journey Built on Hard Work
Nancy is not shy about her journey; she embraces it as a key part of her story. Her academic path, which involved a double major in Business Management and Public Health, shows how she built skills that extend far beyond the runway.
Books and gowns were not her only world either. “My favourite subject in school was History, but my least favourite was Math,” she admitted with a laugh.
Her comment is a small reminder that even beauty queens struggled with equations at some point in their lives.

Behind the achievements is a strong support system. “I probably call my mum, my best friend, or my boyfriend the most,” she shared. It is a powerful glimpse into the relationships that have kept her grounded as she rose from an entry-level job to the world of pageantry.
A Mantra of Self-Belief
Nancy’s mantra is simple but sharp: “The only thing stopping you is you.” For anyone hustling through shifts, late-night study sessions, or side jobs that barely pay, her story is a spark of encouragement.
Her journey proves that crowns are not handed out overnight. They are earned through persistence, small paychecks, late nights, and a fierce belief in oneself even when others might not.
If a $7.50 hourly wage can be a stepping stone to the Miss Kenya USA crown, it is proof that any weekend gig or entry-level grind can be a gateway to greatness.
