Reference Number: ARO-GB31-07-2025

Based within the Epidemiology and Demography Department, this position will support research aimed at understanding the transmission pathways of endemic and emerging infectious diseases through advanced genomics and bioinformatics approaches.

The successful applicant will work closely with senior scientists to optimise diagnostic and genome sequencing protocols, assemble pathogen genomes using next-generation sequencing data, and conduct phylogenetic analyses.

They will also be involved in developing and maintaining laboratory procedures, managing biological samples, ensuring data quality, and contributing to publications.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology or molecular biology, with basic knowledge of bioinformatics and computational data analysis.

Experience in genome assembly of viral or bacterial genomes is required, alongside a minimum of four years’ relevant professional experience, at least one of which should be in a supervisory capacity.

The role demands excellent organisational and presentation skills, strong analytical thinking, and the ability to work effectively in diverse teams.

Early Post-Doctoral Researcher – Serosurveillance

Reference Number: EPR-SEROS31-07-2025

The serosurveillance team at KWRP has been at the forefront of generating evidence to guide immunisation programmes and track population-level exposure to a wide range of diseases, from vaccine-preventable illnesses to arboviruses and respiratory infections.

In this role, the post-holder will take a leading role in a multi-pathogen serosurveillance project, including the innovative use of residual clinical specimens and the in-depth analysis of malaria surveillance data.

Reporting to the study’s Principal Investigator, the researcher will oversee project operations, supervise laboratory and data teams, and engage extensively with Ministry of Health officials at both county and national levels.

They will also be expected to identify new research opportunities, prepare funding proposals, and publish in high-impact academic journals.

Candidates must possess a PhD in epidemiology or a related discipline, with significant field and laboratory research experience, advanced statistical programming skills, and a track record of at least ten years in the field, five of which should be at managerial level.

Early Post-Doctoral Researcher – Yellow Fever

Reference Number: EPD-YF31-07-2025

This Wellcome-funded three-year role will investigate the long-term immune response to fractional and full doses of the yellow fever vaccine in Kenya and Uganda.

The work will involve surveying participants from previous vaccine trials in Kilifi and Mbarara, collecting and analysing blood samples, and performing specialised immunological assays.

The post-holder will collaborate closely with immunologists, virologists, epidemiologists, and social scientists, both within KEMRI and with external partners.

The position requires a PhD in immunology or vaccinology, at least a decade of relevant professional experience including five years in a leadership role, and proven expertise in performing immunological assays.

Proficiency in analytical tools such as STATA and R is essential, as is a strong publication record and the ability to supervise and mentor junior researchers.
