Deputy Party Leader of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) and former senator CleophasMalala is facing possible criminal charges after allegedly landing a helicopter at the Mumias Sports Complex during the national secondary school games finals—without authorization.
The dramatic incident occurred during halftime of a high-stakes football match between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, stunning a crowd of thousands that included students, teachers, education officials, and spectators.
Confirming the incident, Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud announced that both Malala and the helicopter pilot will be prosecuted for multiple offences. These include endangering public safety, creating a public nuisance, trespassing, and violating aviation regulations.
“It was not an emergency landing and it was not an accident,” said Muhamoud.
“This was a clear violation of civil aviation rules, the Basic Education Act, the Ministry of Education guidelines on children’s safety, and the Penal Code.”

Muhamoud condemned the landing in strong terms, describing it as “irresponsible, reckless and a national embarrassment.” He further suggested that Malala’s actions were politically motivated.
“He was probably seeking a political photo opportunity but caused a direct threat to the safety and dignity of Kenyans,” Muhamoud added.
According to police, the unapproved landing disrupted the national school event, triggered panic among students and teachers, and posed a real risk of stampede or accident.
“The helicopter could have crashed, learners could have trampled on each other, and lives could have been lost,” said the regional police chief.
The incident has prompted a joint investigation by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the Ministry of Education, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“Full criminal investigations are underway,” Muhamoud confirmed, vowing accountability for what he termed a “flagrant abuse of public space” and a serious breach of child safety protocols.
He concluded with a firm warning:
“We will not allow disorder, arrogance or impunity to endanger the lives of our future generation. The law will take its full course.”
