In a society where men are often expected to have “made it” by the age of 30 — with a thriving career, stable income, and a family — many silently carry the weight of unmet expectations.

One Kenyan man’s story, Mr. Wanjahi, challenges that narrative with a powerful message of resilience, faith, and late-blooming success.

He has shared a deeply personal story about how he faced rock bottom at 35 — broke, jobless, and living with his mother — before experiencing a life-changing turnaround.

Living with Mum at 35

“At 35 years old, I was still living with my mum. Life had become so tough I decided to return home.”

He lived in a house his family had given him. But that did little to ease the emotional pressure.

“I would wake up and cry. I asked God why I was still alive if it meant suffering like that.”

Despite watching his cousins and brothers thrive, he felt stuck. He wasn’t married, didn’t have a stable income, and was still being fed by his mother.

“My mum would come to check on me around 9 or 10 a.m. I’d just sit there, crying, wondering what the purpose of my life was. I’d ask God if He had spared me to suffer.”

As cousins and brothers appeared to soar ahead in life, he remained at home, jobless, unmarried, and feeling like a failure. The sense of shame and pressure only deepened.

But amid the despair, something shifted.

“At my lowest point, that’s when my breakthrough came. God opened doors for me — at 35,” he says. “The very age people use to shame you, God used as a turning point.”

An opportunity to work in Turkey changed everything. He took a job — part-time at first — earning Ksh 78,000 in his first month.

“I was paid in cash. I put the money in a bag and slept on it. I couldn't believe it was mine.”

For the first time in his life, his bank account reflected a seven-figure balance. “I had never seen a million in my account until recently. And I cried again — but this time, tears of joy.”

His encouragement to Others

“Don’t listen to people who tell you that at 35 you should already be married and established. When God wants to bless you, He will — no matter your age.”

He says his journey is proof that life doesn’t always follow the timelines set by society.

“I don’t know how it happened, but it happened. And if it happened for me, it can happen for you.”
