St Mary's School Yala players pose for a photo. They are ready to defend their Nyanza Region 7s title/HANDOUT

Nyanza region secondary schools champions St Mary’s School Yala and Nyakach Girls are confident of retaining their titles when the Regional Term Two Games get underway in Kisumu tomorrow.

Yala coach George Kerima and Nyakach’s Kevin Otuoma said they have had adequate preparations and they are poised to retain their trophies during the competition, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday.

The tacticians, however, admitted that the competition will be stiff, saying most teams that have qualified for the regional showpiece are strong.

Kerima said: “I expect a competitive championship. However, the boys know what is expected of them, and they are ready to deliver. I expect stiff competition from perennial rivals Maseno School, Friends School Anjego, and Otieno Oyoo.”

Yala will open their campaign against St Joseph’s Rapogi, while J.J Masime’s Friends School Anjego will go against Mbita School.

In other Day-One games, Kisii School will be up against St Paul’s Gekano High School as Otieno Oyoo battles it out with Nyambaria School.

Separately, a confident Nyakach Girls coach, Otuoma, said: “I expect to retain the regional trophy because we have been training for this the whole season. I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t take the trophy back to Nyakach.”

He added: “The girls are looking forward to countering any challenges that come their way. During the Kisumu County championships, they beat Sigoti Complex in sudden death after drawing 19-19 in full time.

“The final was challenging because the girls made a few mistakes. That was a wake-up call for the girls.  We have worked on the mistakes, and the team will be on point at the regional championships,” noted Otuoma. Nyakach Girls headlines Pool A, which also has Kisumu County rivals Sigoti Complex and Kisii County’s St Anne’s Nyangoge.

Last year’s runners-up, Nyagichenche Mixed, are in Pool B, which features Enkinda Mixed and Rangenyo Girls from Nyamira County.

Nyagichenche coach Dennis Onyango said: “The girls have set a target of representing the country at the East African games, but we want to win the Nyanza title."

Migori County’s Friends School Anjego will face Asumbi Girls and Sidindi from Siaya in Pool  C, while Nyamira Girls, Moi Suba Girls, and Magare will square it out in Pool D.
