Kenyan TikTok star Ajib Gathoni recently stunned fans, revealing she earned KSh 2.5 million (roughly £15,000) from a single campaign, “tax-free,” she cheekily noted in a chat with Festive Bread Kenya.

The disclosure, delivered with her signature flair, showcased her financial success and sparked lively reactions online.

How Taxes Apply to Influencers in Kenya

Influencers like Ajib face multiple tax obligations in Kenya, as outlined by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Since 2021, a 1.5% Digital Service Tax (DST) applies to income from digital marketplaces, such as sponsored posts or ads, payable by the 20th of each month.

Additionally, influencers must pay income tax (10–30% based on income bands) and, if their annual turnover exceeds KSh 5 million, a 16% VAT on taxable supplies.

Failure to file returns by June 30 incurs penalties of KSh 2,000 or 5% of tax due, whichever is higher. KRA’s 2023 Finance Act also introduced a 15% withholding tax on digital content earnings, sparking frustration among creators like Samantha Dedra, who argued it stifled creativity.
