R. Kelly Raises Serious Concerns About US Prison Conditions

According to recent reports, R&B singer R. Kelly claims he was deliberately given an overdose of medication by staff at the Bureau of Prisons and denied critical medical treatment while serving his sentence at a federal facility in Butner, North Carolina.

The 58-year-old musician, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, told his lawyer he was rushed to hospital after being administered an extra dose of medication, which caused his health to deteriorate significantly.

He recalled collapsing at the door of his hospital room just one day after admission and overhearing prison officers say, "This is going to open a whole new can of worms."

Kelly also claims he was not permitted to undergo a necessary surgery to remove blood clots from his leg and lungs.

According to his legal team, he was discharged from the hospital prematurely and returned to solitary confinement, despite his deteriorating condition.

“These people did overdose him. They did leave him with blood clots in his lungs and removed him from a hospital that sought to do surgery to remove them,” attorney Beau B. Brindley wrote in a legal filing.

“And they did it within days of his exposure of a plan to kill him set forth by Bureau of Prisons officials.”

In a series of filings that began last week, Kelly’s lawyers further allege that prison officials attempted to recruit white supremacist gang leaders to orchestrate his murder in order to prevent the release of incriminating information about misconduct within the prison system.

Following the initial claims, Kelly was reportedly placed in solitary confinement. His legal team insists this move was retaliatory, arguing that it serves to silence him and prevent further exposure of corruption within the facility.

R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence following multiple convictions. In 2021, he was found guilty in New York of racketeering and sex trafficking.

A year later, he was convicted in Chicago on three counts of producing child sexual abuse imagery and three counts of enticing minors for sex. His appeals have been repeatedly denied, including by the U.S. Supreme Court

Despite the mounting legal challenges, Kelly’s attorney has revealed plans to seek a presidential pardon from former President Donald Trump.
