Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi on Saturday launched rural electrification projects in Siaya County, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand access to electricity across the country.

The launch events, held in Rang’ala and Sigomere within Ugunja Constituency, were marked by celebrations from residents eager to benefit from the national grid connection.

In Rang’ala, the electrification project is set to serve more than 177 households upon completion.

Beyond providing reliable electricity to homes, the initiative is expected to stimulate local economic activities, support small enterprises, and spur overall development in the region.

Wandayi also commissioned the Asango Rural Electrification Project in Sigomere Ward during a colorful ceremony attended by hundreds of excited residents.

Over 70 homes in the area are slated to benefit from the new power connections. The project is designed to enhance security, improve educational outcomes, and promote small-scale trade.

The CS was accompanied by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch, Kenya Pipeline Managing Director Joe Sang, and senior officials from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

Beatrice Njuguna, General Manager - Information, Education & Communication at REREC, represented the CEO of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), alongside REREC staff and members of the communications team.

While addressing jubilant locals at the home of Mama Sarah Atieno—a direct beneficiary of the project—Wandayi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure and universal access to energy.

In February, Wandayi announced that the government had allocated Sh1.5 billion for rural electrification projects in Siaya County.

He emphasised the administration’s commitment to ensuring all regions of Kenya benefit equally from such initiatives and urged residents to support and appreciate government efforts.

During a recent meeting with Siaya leaders at State House, President William Ruto disclosed that Sh1.6 billion has been earmarked for the last-mile electricity programme, targeting 16,000 households in the county.

“We are looking for another Sh500 million to connect an additional 5,000 households,” President Ruto said.
