Former nominated senator Millicent Omanga has found herself at the centre of social media banter after losing a bold KSh 1 million bet she had placed in favour of Manchester United.

The outspoken politician made headlines after publicly announcing her bet ahead of the highly anticipated UEFA Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

Taking to Facebook just before kick-off, Omanga shared her excitement and confidence in her team, revealing that she had staked KSh 1 million alongside three friends who supported Spurs.

“Bet nimeeka leo KSh 1,000,000 na mabossy wangu hapa watatu. Kama kawa Manchester United kichwa na hao wote ni wa Tote. So after 2 hrs lazima nichezee mita nne clean… nimekazaa tu wallahi! Come on,” she posted.

Unfortunately for her, Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat thanks to a first-half goal from Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson. The win ended Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought, while Omanga was left to count her losses.

Hours later, she returned to social media to accept her fate with grace and humour:

“Mita yangu moja imeenda tu hivo, nimetii! Good night wakurugenzi.

But it was the reactions from Kenyans online that truly stole the show.

From fans of rival teams to everyday hustlers, thousands flooded her comments with hilarious jabs, sarcasm, and unsolicited advice.

One user, Langqwextic Duncan, joked, “As a Chelsea fan, it’s my happiness seeing Man United in tears – this happiness can cure cancer!”

Keta Mandela chimed in with biting humour: “Manchester United is the real definition of work hard and die poor – walai!”

Another, Leaidura Lesepenya, added, “Pain successfully landed in the village of Old Trafford.”

Some questioned the logic of betting such an amount, especially in these tough economic times. One user, Symoh Junior, wrote, “You could have distributed the amount to various slums.” Another added, “Ungevaa miniskirt from Kisii to Nairobi – that would’ve been more entertaining.”

Mikaèěl Issah Wanga took a political jab: “You bet with wananchi’s money and still blame Ruto? You ate a million in under two hours!”

Others simply wanted a piece of the action, with BigEye lamenting, “1M? Yaani you couldn’t spare even 100K for me jameni?”

Despite the trolling, there were a few who sympathised with her. One fan wrote, “Pole mama. But next time uliza kwanza before you bet,” while another said, “At least you had the one million – heri wewe.”
