State to link talented youth with NYS in nationwide skills development drive

The government is developing a national framework to integrate talented youth into the National Youth Service (NYS), in a move aimed at equipping them with practical skills and connecting them to professional growth opportunities.

The plan, spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, is being crafted in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports.

Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku made the announcement during the Gen Z football tournament awards ceremony at Mbuinjeru Primary School in Kagaari North Ward, Runyenjes Constituency, Embu County.

According to Ruku, the initiative is part of a broader agenda to support the development of youth talent while creating economic empowerment through the commercialization of youth programs.

“The youth in this country are full of potential. With proper structures and support, they can excel and earn a decent living from their talents,” said Ruku.

He called for greater collaboration across government ministries to build inclusive and sustainable programs that nurture talent, particularly in sports and vocational training.

The Cabinet Secretary also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding NYS recruitment.

The current annual intake of 20,000 is expected to double to 40,000, with a long-term goal of reaching 100,000 youth per year.

He added that commercialising NYS activities would help generate revenue to support the scale-up.

“We will commercialise the National Youth Service to boost recruitment numbers and provide young people with practical skills for the local and international job markets,” Ruku said.

He also outlined plans to expand the National Sports Program to provide more young people with structured training and access to competitive platforms.

During the tournament, Tsunami FC defeated Mugui FC in a lively final. Ruku, who presided over the awards, congratulated the teams for their discipline and competitive spirit.

“Our youth have what it takes to compete at the global stage. With proper support through stadia development, talent academies, and mentorship, we can turn sports into a key economic driver,” he said.

Ruku also commended Kagaari North MCA Muchangi Mwariama for organising the event.

Other local leaders, including nominated MCA Susan Mwende, echoed his sentiments and underscored the role of sports in keeping youth engaged and contributing positively to the economy
