Following the shocking murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were in late April, fresh CCTV footage has surfaced, shedding light on the events leading up to his death.

Were was gunned down on 30 April near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi, in what police suspect was a targeted assassination.

The CCTV footage tracks the MP’s movements from Parliament to the city centre and eventually to the spot where he was shot dead, just a few metres from the CBD.

The Chilling Sequence of Events

The footage shows a white Toyota Mark II parked outside a building at the intersection of Parliament Road and Harambee Avenue.

A man wearing a white shirt and carrying a black sling bag is seen alighting from the vehicle. He then positions himself against an electricity pole nearby. Moments later, a motorbike arrives and parks beside him.

MP Ong'ondo Were

At around 7:30 pm, the MP is seen leaving Parliament in a white Toyota Crown, accompanied by his bodyguard and driver.

As soon as the vehicle is spotted, the man leaning against the pole hops onto the motorbike as a pillion passenger, and they begin trailing the MP’s car.

A few minutes later, at approximately 7:49 pm, the MP’s vehicle is seen stopping along Wabera Street. The bodyguard alights and walks to an M-Pesa kiosk to deposit Ksh 20,000 in the MP’s account.

As the bodyguard completes the transaction, the suspect in the white shirt passes by the M-Pesa kiosk, glancing at the MP’s car while carrying the same black sling bag.

He continues walking away as the bodyguard returns to the vehicle. The car then heads out of the city centre towards Valley Road.

The Deadly Ambush

Nine minutes later, the MP’s vehicle is captured in slow-moving traffic at the Valley Road-Mbagathi Road-Ngong Road intersection, near City Mortuary. The motorbike carrying the suspect is seen tailing them.

Suddenly, the suspect jumps off the motorbike and walks towards the MP’s car, positioning himself near the window where the MP is seated. Without hesitation, he pulls out a gun and fires multiple shots.

Witnesses reported hearing four gunshots. The first bullet shattered the car window, and the subsequent shots struck the MP at close range. After the shooting, the suspect quickly jumps back onto the motorbike, which speeds off towards the city centre.

The motorbike is later seen heading towards the same Toyota Mark II Grande that had initially dropped off the suspect. The two men get into the car and drive off, vanishing from sight.

Arrests and Investigations

The police later tracked down the suspect in Nairobi’s Eastlands area, where he was arrested on Sunday. An autopsy report revealed that the MP had been shot five times, with the bullets piercing vital organs, including his heart.

Several arrests have been made in connection with the killing, including the MP’s security guard, driver, and a neighbour from his rural home.

Today, Friday, Charles Ong'ondo Were will be laid to rest in his ancestral home in Homa Bay County, amid heavy security and ongoing investigations into the motive behind his assassination.
