Simon Kaggwa Njala

Renowned Ugandan TV presenter Simon Kaggwa Njala, widely known for his historic interview that popularized the phrase "Why are you gay?", has expressed his surprise at how people still associate him with that question more than a decade later.

In a post on X recently, the NBS TV presenter hinted that despite having a family, he still encounters people who tease him by asking, "Why are you gay?"

Astonished and amused, Kaggwa questioned why people still think of him that way, emphasizing that he has a wife and children.

"You people, you see me with my wife and kids, yet you still ask, ‘Why are you gay?’ Seriously?" Kaggwa wrote.

Around thirteen years ago, Simon Kaggwa Njala hosted Ugandan human rights activist Pepe Julian Onziema on his Morning Breeze show on NBS TV, where they had an open discussion about homosexuality in Uganda.

During the interview, Kaggwa seemed perplexed about Onziema's choice to be gay and was eager to understand his identity.

"Why are you gay?" Kaggwa repeatedly asked as the interview progressed.

Onziema, who was assigned female at birth, refused to be called gay, insisting that he was a man attracted to women.

"I am not just a human rights activist advocating for equality among people with different sexual orientations and gender identities," he said.

Onziema also revealed that he had a female partner but clarified that they were not sexually active.

He dismissed claims that he was promoting homosexuality in Uganda and denied being paid to do so.

The intense interview was progressing smoothly until Pastor Martin Ssempa, a staunch critic of same-sex relationships, entered the studio and strongly condemned Onziema’s lifestyle.

The moment Onziema saw Pastor Ssempa, he stood up and walked out of the studio but was later convinced to return after a short while.

The hour-long interview has remained a trending topic on social media over the years, with netizens frequently reviving and sharing the clip.
