A police officer was arrested after he lost his AK47 rifle in unclear circumstances inKaptembwo area, Nakuru County.
This is after he failed to return his firearm to the armoury on February 17 night as required, police said.
Police said the officer and his colleague had picked up the weapons for patrols and when the time to return the same came, he failed to do so.
During the patrols, he said, he had excused himself to visit his residence in the area.
It was then he claimed he met strangers in the Mosaik area who also claimed to be police officers and accompanied him to a bar and later to his house.
At the bar, they are said to have picked up drinks and proceeded to the house.
He later blacked out and when woke up in the morning, he found the strangers missing.
His weapon with a magazine was also missing prompting him to report the same.
Police visited the scene and staged a search in vain.
Police suspect the officer was drugged and blacked out to enable the stealing of the weapon.
Police said efforts to trace the weapon are ongoing.
Elsewhere, three suspects, including two police officers were arrested for their alleged involvement in an attempted robbery with violence along the Githurai-Soweto railway line, Nairobi.
The suspects were caught in the act on the night of February 17, 2025, police said.
The officers are attached to the General Service Unit headquarters. They denied the claims.
While on routine patrol, police officers stumbled upon the trio assaulting a man and attempting to rob him of his valuables.
Acting swiftly, the patrol team intervened, apprehending the suspects and escorting them to the Githurai Police Post in the city.
Police said they are investigating the incident with an aim of taking further action.
Cases where police are involved in crime have been on the rise.
