Embrace culture in schools to promote unity, cohesion – students urged

Students across the country have been urged to embrace cultural diversity in understanding and appreciating diverse societal groups with varying interests, skills, talents, and needs.

Remzi Hasanli, Principal of Light Group of Schools, called on learners to appreciate and embrace other cultures stating that a better understanding of different cultures, beliefs, and life experiences can help make the world a stable and peaceful place.

Hasanli pointed out that fostering cultural understanding is key to promoting global citizenship and harmony among students saying that Kenya for instance has many diverse cultures, including African, Arabic, Asian, European, and American cultures which promote unity, national cohesion and economic progression.

Speaking during the school’s spectacular cultural day that showcased heritage, traditions, and customs from various parts of the world, the principal further emphasized the importance of cultural appreciation, unity, and intercultural learning.

“We aimed to create an enriching experience that highlighted the beauty of cultural diversity. The event featured cultural exhibitions, traditional performances, fashion showcases, music, and authentic cuisine from various regions. Some of the countries celebrated during the event included Kenya, Turkey, Somalia, Mexico, India, Sudan, South Africa, and Egypt, among many others,” said Hasanli.

Each culture, she added, was uniquely represented through traditional attire, dances, songs, and historical insights, allowing students, teachers, and parents to gain a deeper understanding of one another’s heritage.

The event highlighted a multicultural parade, where students donned traditional clothing from their respective cultures, displaying an incredible blend of colours and craftsmanship.

Additionally, an array of cultural performances, including folk dances, poetry, and storytelling, provided an engaging insight into the artistic expressions of different communities.

“Our goal with Cultural Day is to create an environment where our students not only celebrate their own heritage but also embrace and appreciate the cultures of their peers,” added Hasanli.

Students and guests also participated in a cultural fair by indulging in traditional delicacies from various countries.

Hasanli called on schools to also embrace cultural days which she said serve as cornerstones that nurture inclusivity, promote respect for different backgrounds, and strengthen the bond within the school’s diverse student body.
