Mutahi Kagwe

Mutahi Kagwe, the former Health Cabinet Secretary, has revealed his net worth to be Ksh 842 million. He disclosed this while appearing before the National Assembly Committee for his vetting as the nominated Agriculture Cabinet Secretary.

Kagwe explained that his net worth is composed of assets, real estate, and accumulated pieces of land.

He is set to replace the current Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Andrew Karanja, who has been nominated as Kenya’s Ambassador to Brazil.

A circular signed by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, in December last year confirmed Mutahi Kagwe as a nominee for the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary position.

"His Excellency the President has today made nominations, re-assignments, and appointments to the senior ranks of the Executive. The nominations effected are in regard to individuals to serve the Nation in its foremost policy organ—the Cabinet—as well as in the Foreign Service. The Head of State and Government's Executive Action re-aligns Ministries, State Departments, and Kenya's Foreign Service to optimize performance and enhance service delivery as set out in the Administration's revitalized plan under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)," the circular read.

Kagwe became well-known in 2020 when he served as the Cabinet Secretary for Health under President Uhuru Kenyatta during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2005, during President Mwai Kibaki’s reign, he was appointed as Minister for Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT).

In 2017, Kagwe announced his bid for the Nyeri Gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee Party ticket but lost. He then took a step back from active politics for two years.

After high school, he attended the University of Nairobi, where he studied Insurance Law, and later furthered his studies at the United States International University, where he earned his master's degree in Business Administration.

Among his four children is musician Kahush whose real name is Kahumburi Mutahi, is one of the most famous rappers in Kenya.
