Strathmore Scorpions coach Meshack Senge has expressed mixed feelings about his team’s performance this season after they narrowly missed out on reclaiming the Kenya Hockey Union Women’s Premier League title.
The Scorpions finished second to Blazers despite a strong campaign. Both teams ended the league on 20 points after nine matches.
“Our season has been good but not very good,” Senge said.
“Good because we finished second, which is better than the fourth place we achieved last season and bad because we had a realistic chance to win the trophy but didn’t capitalise on key opportunities.”
Despite finishing second, Senge believes the team can learn from the experience. “The mental preparation and psychological aspect of the game is something we need to work on moving forward. We gave it our best shot and though it wasn’t enough this time, we live to fight another day.”
He said the integration of young players will soon pay off as they still have a long way to go.
“We will build on the lessons drawn this season as we seek to lift the trophy next season.”
The coach said the lessons learned this year will no doubt fuel their bid for a stronger showing next season.
The Scorpions started their campaign on a poor note, losing their opening game 1-0 to Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) in Mombasa.
The team’s struggles continued into their second match, drawing 1-1 against Amira Sailors. Senge lamented the missed opportunities in the two games, stating: “ The two matches were winnable. Had we won even one, we would’ve won the league. We had the title in our hands but let it slip.”
Reflecting on their final match,
Senge admitted the team underperformed. “We operated at about
40 percent as not all players turned
up in the correct form or attitude.
