The tourism sector is celebrating the launch of Kenya Tourism Awards, which is a youth-led initiative. The awards which aim to celebrate exceptional achievements within Kenya's tourism industry were launched on Tuesday morning at Weston Hotel.
Hosted by the Kenya Tourism Awards Secretariat, the breakfast launch highlighted the theme, "Celebrating excellence; Kenya’s Tourism Trailblazer."
The event emphasized the importance of the tourism sector in Kenya's economic growth, underscoring its role in creating jobs, preserving Kenya's diverse cultural and natural heritage, and promoting sustainable development. The Kenya Tourism Awards seeks to recognize outstanding contributions and innovations that continue to elevate Kenya’s standing as a world-class destination.
The organizers said the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH, has been a steadfast supporter of the initiative from the beginning.
"She is deeply committed to empowering youth in their role of promoting quality and sustainability within the tourism industry. Hon. Miano has consistently emphasized the importance of fostering healthy competition among industry leaders to elevate the overall experience for both local and international visitors."
The awards will be granted in multiple categories, including Best facilities and establishment, Best transport and mobility, industry icons, trailblazer counties as well as special recognition on the tourism industry. These categories aim to honour the dedication and resilience of individuals and organizations that are redefining tourism in Kenya, particularly after the challenges posed by the global pandemic.
In attendance was her excellency Danijela Martic, Ambassador to Kenya, who in the words of the organizers has also played a pivotal role in supporting the initiative.
"With a deep commitment to fostering cultural exchange and sustainable tourism, Ambassador Martic has highlighted the importance of engaging youth in efforts that promote environmental stewardship and heritage preservation."
The CEO Kenya Tourism Awards, Mr. Allan Ndekwe in his remarks shared insights into the selection process, noting that this year’s awards will be determined by a panel of experts in the tourism and hospitality sectors, with public input holding 30% in the final decision.
The
Kenya Tourism Awards ceremony will take place in December 2024, where
the winners will be announced in a gala attended by key stakeholders,
government officials, and dignitaries. This initiative reflects
Kenya’s dedication to rewarding excellence, fostering innovation,
and ensuring a sustainable future for the country’s tourism
