Champions KCB will seek to extend their Kenya Volleyball Federation league dominance when the new season serves off on October 31, coach Japheth Munala has said.

The first leg is scheduled for Kamukunji grounds in Nyeri.

The bankers beat Kenya Prisons 3-1 last season and Munala is keen to retain their title but not without some changes.

He is keen on solidifying key areas in the squad following the departure of several players.

“We are focusing on our setting since our regular setter (Esther Mutinda) won’t be available this season. However, we’re expecting two setters from Kesogon and Kwanthanze schools to join us and strengthen that department. We’re also working on middle-blocking after Mariam Musa and Elizabeth Sokoiyo moved to Pipeline,” Munala said.

Reception and attack are also areas of concern.

“I want to defend my title even as we focus on the Africa Club Championships ( May 2025 ). We hope the team will be intact by then and that the new setters will have adapted to KCB’s system of play,” Munala said.

He is keen to avoid the scare they had at the start of last season when they struggled to see off DCI.

“The only issue we faced last season was in the first matches against DCI, where they almost beat us, but we convincingly won our subsequent matches. We lost our first playoff match to Kenya Prisons, but we bounced back and won the next two with ease. We’re focusing on what we did right in those victories as we prepare for this season. Kenya Prisons played well. We can’t underrate them.”

Every player must focus on covering weak positions and exploiting the team’s strengths. Munala stressed the importance of topping the league before the play-offs.

“The best strategy is to ensure we finish at the top so we can face the team in eighth place. If we lose along the way, it becomes more difficult,” he observed, adding that they will not put emphasis on local tournaments in favour of the league and African championships.

“I’m not much interested in tournaments. I’ll only use them to gauge each player’s capabilities. I don’t have to win.”
