The Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship returned to Kenya on 24-25 October after an eight-year absence.

The event brought athletes from Kenya and Uganda to Kasarani Indoor Arena for a tournament combining regional competition with Korean cultural activities.

Organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in partnership with the Kenya Taekwondo Federation, the championship was the first Kenyan edition since 2018.

Held during Korea Week under the theme “One Spirit, One Sport, One Future”, it offered young athletes an opportunity to compete against regional opponents and gain experience beyond their usual training environments.

“Taekwondo brings communities together through the shared values of discipline, respect and perseverance. Beyond competition, it serves as a powerful bridge of friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between Korea, Kenya and the wider African region,” said H.E. Kang Hyung-shik, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Kenya.

The return follows other sporting exchanges supported by the Embassy, including activities around the World Taekwondo Under-21 Championships hosted in Kenya in December 2025. Together, the initiatives have sought to introduce the martial art to new audiences while giving athletes more opportunities to develop.

“The Korean Ambassador’s Cup provides a valuable platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, gain competitive experience and pursue excellence. With 264 medals and 12 trophies designated for outstanding performances, the championship recognises the discipline, dedication and growing potential of Taekwondo in Kenya,” said Mr Sulaiman Sumba, President of the Kenya Taekwondo Federation.

The competition came during a busy period for Kenyan Taekwondo. Earlier in October, the Kenya Defence Forces’ Ulinzi team recorded 18 medals at the Mazingira Cup in Kisumu, a separate domestic tournament. That result offers a glimpse of the competitive activity underpinning the sport’s development.

“Hosting international championships at facilities such as Kasarani provides Kenyan athletes with valuable opportunities to compete, develop their skills and gain exposure. These events also demonstrate the importance of quality sporting infrastructure and strategic partnerships in advancing sports development in Kenya,” said Mr. Peter Kilimo, Director General of Sports Kenya.

The championship also connected Taekwondo with entertainment. Its closing programme featured K-Tigers, the Korean demonstration team known for combining martial arts, acrobatics and synchronised choreography with K-pop music. Kenya’s Safari Cats were also scheduled to perform, bringing a local contribution to a programme intended to make cultural exchange a two-way experience.

Organisers additionally planned a lucky draw featuring Korean food products and snacks. These activities aimed to reach visitors whose interest in Korean culture may have begun with music, television or food rather than competitive martial arts.

The championship followed Nairobi’s K-Lifestyle Showcase earlier in October, another event introducing Korean products and experiences to Kenyan audiences. Rather than treating sport and culture as separate activities, the two programmes illustrate different ways in which people in Kenya encounter contemporary Korea.

For athletes and clubs, the practical test will be whether the return of the Ambassador’s Cup leads to regular competition, stronger coaching connections and more opportunities to measure progress against regional peers. After eight years away, the tournament has reopened that possibility.
