The National Construction Authority (NCA) has confirmed that the multi-storey building that collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi, was registered in July 2025, as investigations into the incident begin.
In a statement issued Friday, October 23, the authority said the building was registered on July 30, 2025, as a proposed development along 9th Street, Eastleigh, in Kamukunji Sub-County.
The authority said its registration records identify the project's developer, contractor, architect and structural engineer.
The confirmation comes as emergency teams continue responding to the collapse, which left people reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.
“The immediate priority is the safety of the public,” the NCA said, adding that the site had been cordoned off and a multi-agency team was coordinating rescue operations and conducting preliminary investigations.
The authority said it would provide further details on the rescue operation, the status of the site and measures being undertaken by the agencies involved.
It also urged members of the public to keep away from the affected area to allow emergency responders to carry out their work without obstruction.
“The public is directed to keep clear of the affected area and any cordoned-off zones,” the statement said.
The collapse has renewed questions about construction safety and the enforcement of regulations governing building projects in Nairobi, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who visited the scene following the incident, said the building had not complied with construction guidelines.
He pledged legal action against those responsible as investigations seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
