Police fired tear gas to disperse a surging crowd on 9th Street, First Avenue, in Eastleigh after a multi-storey building collapsed, triggering chaos at the scene.

Police said the crowd had blocked roads, preventing emergency service providers from accessing the scene as rescue operations got underway.

Several people are feared trapped beneath the rubble following the collapse of the building, which was under construction.

Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamed said the structure was about 10 floors high as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

“...we are waiting for more information as the responders rush to save lives,” he said.

Mohamed added that more police officers had been deployed to help coordinate emergency services.

The building collapsed at about 1 pm, raising fears for the safety of workers and pedestrians in the busy area. Further details on casualties and the cause of the collapse were not immediately available.
