Several people are feared trapped after an 18-storey building under construction collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene amid fears that people may be trapped beneath the rubble.
Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamed said authorities were yet to get more information on the incident.
“The house was about 10 floors but we are waiting for more as the responders rush to save lives,” he said.
He added that more police officers had been sent to help coordinate the emergency service providers.
The area is usually busy at this hour, raising concerns that pedestrians could also have been affected when the structure came down at about 1pm.
The collapse also raised concerns about the safety of workers and other people who may have been inside or near the structure when it came down.
Further details on possible casualties, the cause of the collapse and the ongoing rescue operation were not immediately available.
