Interior PS Raymond Omollo has linked improved security to economic growth, saying peace and stability are essential for investment, trade and development in areas that have previously experienced insecurity.

Omollo spoke on Wednesday in Eldoret during the opening of the Mashujaa Day Thematic Week ahead of the national celebrations scheduled for October 20 in Uasin Gishu County.

He said a secure environment allows businesses to operate, communities to engage in productive economic activities and infrastructure projects to deliver lasting benefits to residents.

The PS pointed to improvements in security in the North Rift, noting that communities were gradually returning to normal activities, children were going back to school and markets were reopening.

He said the developments demonstrated the direct connection between security and livelihoods, adding that sustaining peace was necessary to support long-term economic development in the region.

Omollo also highlighted road infrastructure projects in the Kerio Valley, including the Kilang’ata-Tot-Kopasi and Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich corridors.

"The projects are intended to improve connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and link communities to markets and essential services," he stated.

According to Omollo, infrastructure development must be accompanied by improved security to ensure public investments translate into increased commerce and expanded economic opportunities for local communities.

He further stressed the need to strengthen the National Police Service through recruitment, improved welfare, training, modern equipment and technology.

The PS said a professional, well-equipped and motivated police service was essential for effective security operations and maintaining public confidence.

During an engagement with members of the public, residents raised concerns over insecurity in Langas Ward, Eldoret, including robberies, house break-ins and physical attacks.

Omollo called for greater cooperation between police officers, local institutions, landlords and residents to address the security challenges.

He also emphasised timely sharing of information and community participation in preventing crime, as well as closer cooperation across the justice system to ensure reported cases are handled effectively.

Gender-based violence and femicide also featured in the discussions, with participants calling for accountability, timely investigations and proper handling of criminal cases.

They also highlighted the need to address social and economic challenges that can increase vulnerability, alongside improved access to support services.

"Sustainable development requires a safe environment in which people can live, work, learn and invest without fear," he said.

He urged communities to work closely with security agencies to identify and address threats to public safety.

The Mashujaa Day Thematic Week will also showcase the role of sports in national development, with Omollo highlighting sports infrastructure as a contributor to talent development, employment and local economic activity.

He cited Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Kapseret Stadium and Kamariny Stadium as examples of facilities that support athletes while creating opportunities for surrounding communities.

The thematic week forms part of activities leading to the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret on October 20, which will also provide an opportunity to showcase development initiatives and bring public services closer to citizens.

The launch was attended by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector-General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, National Celebrations Thematic Committee chair Dennis Itumbi and Government Spokesperson Charles Owino, among other dignitaries.
