When 154 candidates at Kaundu Senior School in Mwingi North, Kitui County, sat their KCSE examinations in 2025, few could have imagined that their performance would leave a lasting legacy for the institution.
Of the 154 candidates, 152 qualified for direct university admission, thrusting the rural school in Mumoni district into the limelight and earning it recognition across the county and the country at large.
Kaundu emerged as Kitui County’s leading school in the number of candidates qualifying for direct university admission, outperforming established institutions, including Kitui School.
Even the two candidates who did not attain the university entry grade secured results that opened doors to other lower level tertiary institutions.
The remarkable achievement caught the attention of Mwingi North MP Paul Nzengu, who soon after the results were out made an impromptu visit to the school to celebrate with the administration, teachers and learners.
Impressed by the results, he pledged to reward the institution with a school bus through the constituency’s NG-CDF kitty where he is the patron.
That promise has now been fulfilled.
On Saturday, the Mwingi North NG-CDF leadership, led by its chairperson, David Musyoki, handed over a brand-new bus to the school, fulfilling the MP’s pledge.
Ironically, the candidates whose performance inspired the donation will not get to enjoy the convenience of travelling in the bus they helped earn for their school.
Having completed their examinations and having joined university they have since moved on to the next chapter of their lives as other learners enjoy the sweet fruits of their hard work.
Yet, their achievement has secured a lasting legacy for generations of learners to come. The bus stands as a reminder that hard work and academic excellence can bring tangible benefits to an entire school community.
The handover ceremony sparked jubilant celebrations, with students and parents breaking into dance at the sight of the new yellow bus.
School principal David Murithi, patron Munyoki Kathuo, Mumoni director of education, Osman Omar, teachers and parents attended the ceremony to receive the donation.
Musyoki said the bus was a fulfilment of Nzengu’s promise to reward the school for its impressive examination performance in the 2025 KCSE..
“The donation underscores the high premium our MP places on education,” he said.
He added that Nzengu had been particularly impressed by the school’s results and believed that providing a bus, which the institution had struggled to acquire, would motivate learners and help sustain its academic progress.
“The school impressed our MP by putting the constituency not only on the county map but also on the national map in terms of performance in national examinations,” Musyoki said.
Receiving the bus, Murithi described the donation as a major morale booster, saying it would encourage students to aim even higher in their academic pursuits.
Kathuo described the donation as a great honour for the growing institution and pledged that the school community would work hard to maintain and improve its academic standards.
He also announced plans to introduce aviation and marine studies, saying the initiative would broaden learners’ academic opportunities and prepare them for careers in specialised fields.
