SCREENGRABA fuel tanker exploded shortly after midnight on the Salgaa-Nakuru stretch of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, the Kenya Red Cross said.
The Red Cross said its team responded to the incident and attended to two casualties.
"A multi-agency team had contained the fire following the explosion," the organisation said in a statement.
The incident has led to the closure of the highway at Kibunja and Soilo interchange.
The Red Cross urged motorists using the busy highway to seek alternative routes as the response operation continued.
The Red Cross did not immediately provide the cause of the explosion in its statement.
The incident occurred along a key section of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, with the closure affecting traffic on the route.
The latest tanker explosion comes less than a month after another fuel tanker accident along the Eldoret-Turbo road.
On September 17, several people were feared dead after a tanker carrying petrol overturned and burst into flames near Paul Boit High School. Residents who rushed to the scene to scoop fuel were feared to have been caught in the fire.
Kenya Red Cross described the incident as a “mass casualty incident” and said it was responding alongside Kenya Police and firefighters. It urged motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency teams unhindered access.
The number of casualties had not been confirmed by police at the time of publication.
