A Gen Z couple stunned residents and passers-by in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) after choosing the busy city streets as the venue for their wedding.

The couple, identified only by their first names as Abigael and Kiragu, exchanged vows at the Kenya National Archives, turning an ordinary day in the busy CBD into an unexpected celebration of love.

There was no fancy wedding venue, elaborate reception or carefully selected guest list.

Instead, hundreds of curious strangers, street onlookers, shoppers and passers-by suddenly became their wedding guests, cheering the couple on as they celebrated their union.

Abigael was dressed in a striking white wedding gown, complete with carefully done makeup, while Kiragu appeared ready for the special occasion.

One of the defining moments came when Kiragu went down on one knee and produced a ring for his bride-to-be.

He gently slid the ring onto Abigael’s finger as onlookers watched and cheered, turning the busy pavement into an impromptu wedding venue.

What initially appeared to be another street skit or staged social media scene soon took a different turn.

As the ceremony unfolded, curious onlookers realised that the couple was genuinely getting married, prompting cheers and celebrations from the crowd that had gathered around them.

Muthoni Maina, one of those who witnessed the unusual ceremony, said she initially thought the couple was filming a movie.

“I thought they were shooting a movie,” she said, as the crowd continued to follow the proceedings.

The wedding added another chapter to the growing phenomenon of Gen Z couples choosing unconventional ways to celebrate their relationships and major milestones.

It is also not the first time Nairobi’s streets have provided the backdrop for a Gen Z wedding.

In August 2024, another couple, Tony Sherman and Kendi, who met during the anti-government protests, held a viral public wedding at the same Nairobi Archives spot.

Their wedding attracted significant attention after they chose to exchange their vows in the heart of the CBD, surrounded by members of the public.

The latest ceremony once again left Nairobi residents fascinated, with many taking photos and videos as the couple celebrated their big day in full public view.

But as the celebrations continued, questions remained among some onlookers: Who officiated the wedding? Was there a member of the clergy present? And was the ceremony legally formalised, or was it simply a public celebration of the couple’s union?
