President William Ruto engages with beneficiaries during the issuance of 20,189 title deeds in Mokowe, Lamu County/PCSPresident William Ruto on Saturday handed over 20,189 title deeds to residents of Lamu County, as his eight-day development tour of the Coast region came to an end.
Ruto presided over the title deed issuance ceremony in Mokowe, where residents received ownership documents under the government’s wider Coast titling programme.
The exercise is part of a broader initiative targeting 300,000 title deeds across the six coastal counties.
The beneficiaries include residents of Ashuwei, Mvundeni, Rubu, Mwambore and Simambae community lands, as well as those in the Shanga/Ishakani, Muhamarani, Kauthara and Hindi Magogoni settlement schemes, among other areas.
The president said the government would continue processing and issuing title deeds to residents whose documents were still pending, as it seeks to address longstanding land ownership challenges in the region.
The Lamu issuance follows similar exercises conducted during Ruto’s coast tour, which has taken him through Taita-Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River and Lamu counties.
The State Department for Lands has described the wider programme as part of efforts to address historical land ownership challenges and provide residents who have occupied land for years with formal documentation and security of tenure.
Ruto has made land titling a major component of his coastal tour, with the Government saying the programme will benefit hundreds of thousands of families across the region.
On Friday, the President oversaw the issuance of title deeds in Mombasa, where thousands of ownership documents were handed to residents as part of the same Coast-wide programme.
He said the 300,000 titles being issued across the region represented an effort to provide coastal residents with formal documentation for their land.
Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and Lamu Governor Issa Timamy were among the leaders who joined the President during the Lamu ceremony.
Ruto said the government would continue working to ensure that those whose title deeds were yet to be processed receive them, as the administration seeks to clear the remaining cases across the region.
