EACC headquarters/FILEThe Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two Nyamira county assembly officials over alleged irregularities in the award of a Sh367 million tender for the construction of an office block.
The arrests bring to five the number of county officials arrested in connection with the tender, according to a statement issued by the EACC.
The commission said the alleged irregularities in the procurement process resulted in the loss of over Sh30 million in public funds.
The two officials were arrested within Kisii county during an operation conducted by EACC investigators and are being processed at the commission’s South Nyanza Regional Office in Kisii.
According to the EACC, the officials are expected to face charges including abuse of office, wilful failure to comply with the law relating to the management of public funds and negligence of official duty.
The EACC said the alleged irregularities “resulted in the loss of Sh30,187,396 in public funds.”
The two officials are expected to be arraigned in court after the completion of processing at the commission’s regional office.
The latest arrests follow the earlier arrest and charging of three other Nyamira County Assembly officials in connection with the same tender.
The three previously arrested officials include a senior official of the Nyamira county assembly, an officer for Roads and Public Works and an infrastructure officer.
The arrests form part of the EACC’s ongoing investigations into alleged graft and irregular management of public funds within county governments.
