Menengai Oilers star Glacious Owino has earned a call-up to the Kenya Sevens squad for the Africa Sevens Cup Championship in Mauritius this weekend after an impressive National Sevens Circuit campaign.

Owino is joined in the squad by Kabras forwards Patrick Sabatia and Brian Mutua, Mwamba’s Dennis Livoi and Oilers’ Lucky Onyango as head coach Kevin Wambua blends emerging talent with experienced campaigners for the continental assignment.

Owino was named Most Valuable Player at the Christie Sevens a fortnight ago and enjoyed a consistent campaign across all five legs of the domestic circuit.

His pace and decision-making have earned him a place in a squad preparing to challenge for a continental title that has eluded Kenya for the past two seasons. Sabatia brings physicality and experience from Kabras, while Livoi impressed as Mwamba enjoyed a competitive campaign.

Onyango was also influential for Oilers, who finished third in the National Sevens Circuit. Elvis Olukusi and Rayvon Ambale will co-captain the team, with Wambua also including experienced players Gabriel Ayimba and Brian Mutua alongside regular Shujaa campaigners Clinton Amukwachi, David Nyangige, Arnold Agonda and Victor Odhiambo.

“We had an intense training period and, with a blend of youth and experience, we want to go all out and win,” said Wambua, who has put his charges through two weeks of intensive preparations.

Kenya will open their Pool B campaign against Namibia on Saturday at 8:44 am EAT before facing Réunion at 11:50 am. They will complete their pool fixtures against Madagascar at 2:40 pm.

The Mauritius tournament will provide Shujaa with valuable international competition ahead of the 28th edition of Safari Sevens, which will be held at Nyayo National Stadium from October 9-11.

Kenya and South Africa occupy the top two positions in the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens rankings under the revised Rugby Africa format, with the Mauritius tournament set to determine the rankings of the participating teams below the two leading sides.

Kenya squad: Elvis Olukusi (co-captain), Rayvon Ambale (co-captain), Brian Mutua, Clinton Amukwachi, Patrick Sabatia, David Nyangige, Glacious Owino, Dennis Livoi, Arnold Agonda, Lucky Onyango, Victor Mola.
