Rescue operation ongoing at Osiri Matanda gold mining village in Nyatike Sub-County county, Migori/ Faith Matete
Two women are still reportedly trapped underground after a building where they were sleeping collapsed into a mining shaft at the Osiri Matanda gold mining area in Nyatike, Migori County, on Thursday night.
The women, who were reportedly doing business at the mining site, were inside one of the rooms when the structure gave way and disappeared into the ground.

Their whereabouts remained unknown as rescue teams worked to reach the collapsed section, while relatives, fellow miners and residents waited anxiously for any sign of life.

Duro Elly, chairman of the Artisanal Mining Committee in Migori County, said the women were believed to have been inside the collapsed structure.

“We are hopeful we will find the two ladies still alive,” Elly said.

He said the scale of the collapse had made the search difficult, with a large section of the ground reportedly giving way.

David Sewe, chairman of the Matanda Mining Welfare Committee, said he was alerted about the incident at around 11.45pm.

“I was called around 11.45 at night that there was a house that had sunk with some people. I came to the site and learnt that there were two ladies who were sleeping in one of the rooms that had collapsed. They were only two,” Sewe said.Residents keep watch as rescue operations are underway at Osiri Matanda gold mining village in Nyatike, Migori County, after several buildings collapsed into underground mining shafts/ Faith Matete
