The government is pre-positioning food and medical supplies ahead of expected El Niño rains, Eastern Regional Commissioner Jacob Muganda has said.
He said multi-agency teams are putting in place elaborate measures to ensure safety during the heavy rains.
He urged residents in the Eastern region to move away from flood-prone areas.
"The weatherman has said there will be El Niño. Eastern region has many steep areas like parts of Meru, Kilungu and Machakos that are prone to landslides," Muganda said.
"We are sensitising people to temporarily move away in case there are indications of flooding. We have arrangements for medicine and relief food at county and subcounty levels as well"
He said consignments will be supplied to strategic locations in collaboration with county governments.
"There is a proper elaborate plan put in place with county governments to ensure we mitigate wherever we can. We, however, call on the public to take precaution," he said.
On development, Muganda warned contractors against delaying President William Ruto’s projects in the region.
She said the delays could sabotage plans to commission projects early next year.
"The people of Kenya want to see commitment given by the President. He is availing finances, so why should somebody derail the process?" he asked.
He said the law will be applied to contractors who fail to complete projects on time.
"They will be arrested and prosecuted. You either do the right thing or we crack the whip. We don't want cowboy contractors hijacking the President's legacy," Muganda said.
The administrator toured several government projects in Machakos county.
They included the ongoing construction of affordable housing units within Machakos Township, hostels in Machakos town, and several roads in Mwala subcounty, all in Machakos county.
Muganda noted that there were some contractors who were doing commendable work in the region.
He said as government officials, they would continue monitoring all government projects in progress across the region to ensure timely and quality completion.
