Wafalme Stars' libero Hudson Kipchumba/ HANDOUT

Hudson Kipchumba will be tasked with anchoring the defense for Wafalme Stars as Kenya competes against the continent's elite at the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Tunis, Tunisia, from September 13 to 26.

The 22-year-old General Service Unit (GSU) libero has established himself through consistent domestic performances.

He was named best libero in the 2024/25 Kenya Volleyball Federation men’s league after helping GSU reclaim the national title, before collecting the same award at both the inaugural Kenya Cup in 2025 and the 2025 Kipchumba Karori International Tournament.

Following stints with Kenya Ports Authority and GSU, Kipchumba featured for Chema Volleyball Club during the 2025 season before earning a recall to the national setup.

"I have been working on my reception and defense because those are the areas where the team depends on me," Kipchumba said. "Going to Tunisia, I want to show that I have grown as a player and that I can handle the pressure of playing at a higher level."

Wafalme qualified for the tournament by sweeping the CAVB Zone Five qualifiers in Kampala in June, winning all five matches without dropping a set.

"We have confidence because of what we achieved in the qualifiers, but we know Tunisia will be different," Kipchumba added. "Every match will demand concentration, good communication, and discipline. We have to start fresh and take each opponent seriously."

Alongside Stephen Barack, Kipchumba is one of two liberos in Kenya’s 14-man squad tasked with strengthening reception, organizing the backcourt, and driving quick defensive transitions.

The tournament provides another platform for Kenya to build on its recent progress, which includes a 3–2 victory over defending champions Egypt at the 2021 continental championship in Kigali and a silver-medal finish at the 2024 African Games in Accra. With Kenya targeting a top-three finish, Kipchumba's defensive reliability will be central to Wafalme's ambitions.

"We are not going to Tunis just to participate," Kipchumba said. "We want to compete against the best teams, learn from every match, and make an impact. Personally, I want to return a better player and help the team achieve its target."
