President William Ruto has mourned four traders from Chwele Market in Bungoma county who died in a road accident at Mai Mahiu.

The traders were travelling to Karatina to procure groceries when the accident occurred, according to Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka.

"We are saddened by the death of four traders from Chwele Market in Bungoma county who lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Mai Mahiu," Ruto said.

Ruto sent condolences to the families and relatives of those who died and prayed for strength and comfort as they come to terms with the loss. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.

"May God give strength and comfort to the families and relatives to bear the loss. We also wish speedy recovery to the injured," he wrote.

Earlier, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka confirmed the deaths of the four traders.

The governor said five other members of the business community were injured and were receiving treatment at various hospitals.

"To the five others currently receiving treatment in various hospitals, we wish them a swift and full recovery," Lusaka said.

Lusaka assured the victims and their families of the county government's support as they deal with the loss.

"As a County Government, we stand firmly with them and their families during this difficult time, and we will continue to offer our support in every way possible," he said.
