Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Ethekon/FILEThe Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has moved to clarify a voter registration exercise at Kenyatta University after a video circulating on social media raised questions about how the process was being conducted.
In a statement on Thursday, the commission said it was conducting continuous voter registration at all 290 constituency offices, Huduma Centres and its Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
IEBC said it may also deploy voter registration kits to strategic locations where necessary to reach eligible citizens, explaining that this was the case at Kenyatta University.
The commission, however, clarified that voter transfer services are only offered at its constituency offices across the country and not at other locations.
It said acknowledgement slips are issued only to newly registered voters and not to those seeking to transfer their polling stations because their details are already in the voters' register.
IEBC also stressed that registration as a voter does not give the commission authority to direct or influence an eligible voter to choose a particular polling station.
"The role of the IEBC is to facilitate the registration of eligible Kenyans as voters and does not direct, compel or influence voters to select a particular polling station," the commission said.
The commission said it had taken the allegations raised in the video seriously and was working with relevant government agencies to take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
It said arrests would be made where culpability is established.
IEBC urged members of the public not to interfere with its processes as it carries out its constitutional mandate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The commission also cautioned Kenyans against relying on misinformation and urged the public to obtain information on voter registration and related processes only from its official channels.
