Motorists are stuck in heavy traffic along Waiyaki Way near the ABC Place–Red Hill Road junction following the closure of the overpass on September 9, 2026.Motorists were stuck in traffic for hours along Waiyaki Way on Wednesday evening following the closure of the overpass at the ABC Place–Red Hill Road junction.
The traffic began building up from around 5 pm, with motorists reporting that the situation worsened as the evening progressed.
John Mwangi, a motorist travelling from Westlands towards Kangemi, said he left Westlands at 7.05 pm but took more than one and a half hours to reach ABC Place.
“I was stuck in traffic. I only got to ABC at around 8.30 pm,” Mwangi said.
"Apart from being stuck in traffic, I paid Sh80 from Westlands to Kangemi. Normally, I would have paid Sh40 or Sh50."
Another motorist, Mary Atieno, reiterated what Mwangi had said.
“For those going to Kinoo, Regen and even Kikuyu, we normally pay between Sh80 and Sh100, but today some were paying Sh150,” Atieno said.
By about 9 pm, motorists were still reporting heavy traffic along the corridor, with long queues stretching through parts of Waiyaki Way.
The disruption follows the closure of the overpass at the ABC Place–Red Hill Road junction and a temporary diversion affecting motorists using the Nairobi Expressway Westlands Exit.
Motorists are stuck in heavy traffic along Waiyaki Way near the ABC Place–Red Hill Road junction following the closure of the overpass on September 9, 2026MOJA Expressway Company said scheduled maintenance and construction works along the elevated expressway deck after the Nairobi Westlands Exit would run from 8 pm on September 8 to 5 pm on September 20, 2026.
During the works, motorists exiting the Nairobi Expressway at the Westlands Exit have been directed to join the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way.
The diversion is expected to affect traffic flow along the already busy corridor, particularly during peak hours.
MOJA Expressway has urged motorists to exercise caution and follow instructions from traffic marshals stationed along the affected route.
The expressway operator said toll station operations remain unaffected by the maintenance works.
Motorists using Waiyaki Way and surrounding roads have been advised to plan their journeys and allow additional travel time.
