The opposition's weekend mobilisation comes against the backdrop of President Ruto's four-day tour of the South Rift and Nyanza

Leading opposition figures will fan out across different fronts this weekend as they seek to consolidate their political bases ahead of the 2027 General Election, while Democratic Change Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua continues his mobilisation tour of the United States.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka will hold meet-the-people rallies in Garissa and Tana River on Saturday and Sunday respectively, while Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna is scheduled to lead a mobilisation tour in Nairobi on Sunday.

The separate engagements come as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build their political networks and strengthen their support bases ahead of a possible showdown with President William Ruto in 2027.

Sifuna has described his Nairobi engagements as a "back to base" tour, coming days after he took the Linda Mwananchi caravan to Bumula constituency in Bungoma county on September 5.

Ahead of the Nairobi tour, Sifuna on Wednesday announced the addition of two prominent figures to the Linda Mwananchi team.

"Humbled to receive Mukhisa Kituyi at the office this morning in the company of my Senate colleagues Sen Khalwale and Osotsi. Kituyi will be a great addition to the Linda Mwananchi team," Sifuna said in a post on X.

In a subsequent post, Sifuna announced that former Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo had also joined the team.

"Anasema Sunday tupatane kiwanja kuna story ya Mombasa anataka ku washow (He says let's meet on Sunday, he has a story from Mombasa he wants to tell you)," he said.

Kalonzo, meanwhile, has been preparing for his weekend tour with a mobilisation drive with Coast leaders.

He met Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako and former Cabinet secretary and ex-Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa as he sought to strengthen political networks in the region.

"Our conversation was candid and strategic: how we strengthen the region's political voice, and how the Coast takes its rightful place in the journey to a better Kenya. The Coast is ready, and the message is clear: unity, inclusion, a new direction," Kalonzo said on X.

While Kalonzo and Sifuna will be on the ground in Kenya, Gachagua will continue his engagements with Kenyans in the United States, having concluded his meet-the-people tour in Spokane, Washington, and scheduled to proceed to Portland.

During his engagement with the Kenyan diaspora in Spokane on September 5, Gachagua said discussions centred on investor confidence, partnerships and the role of Kenyans at home and abroad in shaping the country's future.

"We have agreed that once a new government is formed within the next 338 days, we will call upon the expertise of the Kenyan diaspora to help rebuild and develop our nation," he said.

Gachagua said an opposition administration would prioritise technology, skills and knowledge-sharing to accelerate Kenya's development.

"Kenya’s brightest minds no longer need to leave in search of opportunities; together, we will transform Kenya into a place where people can work, thrive and truly call home," he said.

He also addressed the Maa community during a cultural evening in Spokane on Sunday, where he pledged that an opposition government would resolve the longstanding land question and return grabbed land to its rightful owners.

"There will be no sacred cows. The Maa community deserves dignity, respect, and justice," he said.

The opposition's weekend mobilisation comes against the backdrop of President Ruto's four-day tour of the South Rift and Nyanza, where he is seeking to consolidate his political inroads in areas traditionally associated with the opposition.

Ruto's tour, which began on Wednesday, will take him through Kisumu and Siaya counties before proceeding to Homa Bay and Migori in South Nyanza.

The President's programme is expected to focus on project launches, inspections and engagements with local leaders as the race for influence in the vote-rich Nyanza bloc gathers pace.

With opposition leaders also stepping up their mobilisation efforts across different parts of the country, the competing political activities point to an increasingly active early phase of the 2027 contest.
