From theatre to television
Vike's professional acting journey began in theatre. She performed set-book plays with Theatrix Arts Ensemble before moving on to other theatre productions. Her early work gave her experience that later helped her make the transition to television.
Her major breakthrough came when the late Charles Bukeko, who played Papa Shirandula, contacted her after an earlier audition.
Instead of the role she had originally auditioned for, Bukeko offered her the part of a house help from Mumias.
“I’m giving you a house girl role and she is from Mumias,” Vike recalled Bukeko telling her.
The character became Awinja, one of the most recognisable figures on Kenyan television.
The Papa Shirandula years
Papa Shirandula ran from 2006 until 2020 and became an important platform for a generation of Kenyan actors and comedians. Bukeko's death in July 2020 brought the show's era to an end, but many of its performers continued building careers in different parts of the creative industry.
For Vike, the show provided more than visibility. She has previously said the role significantly changed her financial circumstances and enabled her to support her family.
She has also spoken about Bukeko's influence on her career and the difficulty of losing him during the Covid-19 period.
A new life on digital screens
When Papa Shirandula ended around the same period that the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted live entertainment, Vike turned to social media and digital content.
The move was not initially part of a long-term plan. She has explained that with events cancelled and traditional entertainment opportunities reduced, she picked up her phone and began creating content for online audiences.
“I don’t like being idle… it became starting from scratch with my phone and creating content.”
That transition helped her remain visible beyond conventional television.
She has since worked as a content creator, actress, producer and brand personality, while also appearing in film projects and digital productions. Her work has included projects such as Disco Matanga and other online productions.
39 years, and still evolving
Vike's career now spans roughly 18 years of professional entertainment work, from her early theatre days to television and digital platforms.
Her birthday therefore comes as more than a personal milestone. It also marks a career shaped by the changing face of Kenya's entertainment industry.
From performing set books on stage to becoming Awinja on prime-time television and later building an audience online, Vike has repeatedly adapted to new spaces.
In 2023, she was also awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya for her contribution to the country's entertainment industry.
At 39, the actress remains active on screens and online, with a career that continues to move with the times.
