A woman was shot dead and another sexually
assaulted after suspected bandits ambushed a water bowser along the
Morita-Ombolion road in Pokot North, West Pokot county.
The attack occurred on September 4, 2026, at about
8 pm, in Alale area.
The water bowser was ferrying water and had five occupants: three men, including the driver, and two women, when they encountered four suspected armed bandits.
Police said the driver spotted the attackers about 50 metres ahead and applied the emergency brakes in an attempt to evade them.
The lorry, however, hit a tree and came to a stop, prompting the occupants to flee in different directions.
One of the women, whose identity had not immediately been established, was shot in the back and died at the scene.
National Police Reservists (NPRs) responded to the
incident and pursued the suspected attackers.
The other four occupants were later found hiding
at different locations and had not sustained physical injuries.
Police said the surviving woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted by the four armed men.
The NPR team continued combing the area in search of the suspects, while police said patrols had been intensified along the route to prevent further attacks.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with police pursuing the suspected bandits and working to establish the identity of the woman who was killed.
Such attacks have been on the rise amid efforts to address the same.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old secondary school student was found dead in a sugarcane farm in Etago, Kisii county, in an incident police are treating as murder.
The body of the Form Three student at Suguta Girls Secondary School in Nyamache was discovered on September 4, 2026, in Nyabiosi village, Nyabiosi Sub-Location.
The body was found lying face down inside a
sugarcane farm belonging to a local resident.
The body was discovered by a herdsman who was
tethering cows in fields near the farm.
Police officers visited the scene after the incident was reported by Nyabiosi Assistant Chief Evans Chore.
Investigators observed a visible injury to the back of the teenager’s head, specifically around the occipital region, which was suspected to have been inflicted with a blunt object.
Police said the girl was last seen at her home at
about 8 pm on Thursday while in good health.
The motive for the killing had not been
established by the time of the report.
Detectives processed and documented the scene as investigations continued. The body was later moved to Tabaka Mission Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy.
Police are investigating the circumstances
surrounding the teenager’s death and seeking to establish who was responsible
for the killing.
