At least five passengers were killed on the spot and four others injured after a matatu collided with a stalled truck along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway early Saturday morning.
The accident occurred at about 4:50am at the Twin Bridge area and involved a Toyota Hiace matatu and a Mercedes-Benz truck, according to police.
Police said the matatu was travelling from Nairobi towards Eldoret when it reached the scene and rammed into the rear of the truck, which had stalled on the climbing lane.
The impact killed five passengers whose identities had not been established by the time of the report.
Four other passengers sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the five victims were moved to the Londiani Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Police officers visited the scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police said 12 people were killed in separate accidents overnight. They included five riders, five passengers and a driver. At least 13 others were injured in the accidents.
On Friday, five other people were killed and three others injured after a Mitsubishi lorry veered off the road and landed in a trench in Kitui County.
The accident occurred on September 4, 2026, in the Kasarani area along the Kasala murram road in Ikutha Sub-County.
According to police, the vehicle was transporting goods to Kasala Market when the accident occurred.
Police said the driver lost control after encountering loose soil on the road. The vehicle swerved off the left side of the road before landing in a nearby trench.
Five passengers died from injuries sustained in the crash.
They were identified as Lilian Simba Mwanzia, 40, Sarah Katumi, 35, and Alex Mwendo, 25, while two other victims were yet to be identified.
The driver sustained chest pain, together with three others.
The injured victims were rushed to Ikutha Level IV Hospital for treatment.
Police officers visited the scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The bodies of the five victims were removed and taken to Mutomo Hospital mortuary, where they were booked for preservation and postmortem examination.
