OMS Africa principal officer Lydia Wangare Gakanga /HANDOUTFinancial services firm Kweli Capital’s subsidiary OMS Africa, has appointed Lydia Wangare Gakanga as its Principal Officer.
The move places the executive at the helm of the brokerage’s operations and regulatory compliance as it seeks to strengthen its position in Kenya’s capital markets.
The appointment, which took effect immediately, comes just over a year after Kweli Capital Group acquired a majority stake in the brokerage, formerly known as Old Mutual Securities Ltd, from Old Mutual Holdings Plc in 2025. The value of the transaction was not disclosed.
Gakanga joins OMS Africa from Stanbic Bank Kenya, where she was an Investment Specialist in the Wealth & Investments team.
She brings more than 10 years of experience spanning banking, asset management, portfolio management and capital markets.
Her appointment gives her formal responsibility for OMS Africa’s operations, regulatory compliance and client conduct, under the Principal Officer role defined by the Capital Markets Authority.
“I am delighted to take up this role at a time when the industry is experiencing unique challenges. I look forward to working with my team to position this firm among the best brokerage companies not only in the region, but across the continent,” Gakanga said.
OMS Africa has operated on the Nairobi Securities Exchange since 1992 and holds broker code B08.
The firm is also a member of the Kenya Association of Stockbrokers and Investment Banks and serves more than 34,000 clients, according to the company.
The appointment comes as Kweli Capital expands its financial services operations beyond its traditional market. The group recently secured a fund management licence in Uganda, extending its regulated presence beyond Kenya.
Kweli Capital operates businesses covering fund management, stock brokerage, savings and homeownership finance through a tenant purchase scheme. The group says it uses technology to connect retail savers, qualified investors and real estate market participants to African capital markets.
Gakanga’s appointment also increases the representation of women in the group’s senior leadership, with Rebecca Osogo overseeing the parent company’s strategy and direction while Gakanga takes charge of the licensed brokerage’s day-to-day operations and compliance.
