A sedentary lifestyle and diets high in processed carbohydrates and sugars may increase the risk of developing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Gynecologist Victor Wanjohi says although the hormonal condition can be genetic, obesity and physical inactivity are key lifestyle factors that can be addressed to reduce the risk. About one in ten women in Kenya is affected by PCOS, with September marked as PCOS Awareness Month.
