The fertiliser subsidy programme introduced by President William Ruto in 2023 has contributed to a significant recovery in agricultural output, particularly maize production. Kenya National Bureau of Statistics data shows maize cultivation increased from 2.11 million hectares in 2022 to 2.41 million hectares in 2024. Over the same period, maize production rose from 34 million bags to 44 million bags, signalling improved agricultural productivity. The feriliser subsidy programme has seen the price of a 50-kilogramme bag drop from Sh6,500 in 2022 to Sh2000 currently.
