Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital (MNTRH) has advertised a vacancy for the position of Chief Executive Officer and invited suitably qualified candidates to apply.

In an advert notice, MNTRH said the vacancy is for a three-year contract, which may be renewed subject to performance.

The position is based at Mathari Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nairobi.

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing decisions of the Board of Directors and overseeing the hospital's strategic, financial and administrative operations.

The CEO will facilitate the preparation and implementation of the hospital's strategic and annual work plans, prepare the annual procurement and disposal plan and oversee the preparation of budgets and financial reports for consideration and approval by the Board.

The officer will also be responsible for risk management, developing performance standards, ensuring compliance with government policies and regulations and implementing the hospital's vision, mission and short- and long-term strategies.

The hospital said the CEO will further oversee the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures, communicate with stakeholders, advise the Board on the hospital's performance and operations and manage its financial, physical and human resources.

"Successful candidates are required to develop the hospital's leadership team, promote ethical practices and good governance, strengthen collaboration with different stakeholders and spearhead resource mobilisation," the hospital said.

Among the requirements, applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university and a Master's degree in a health-related field.

Candidates must also be registered medical practitioners with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and hold a current practising licence and specialist recognition certificate.

The hospital requires applicants to have completed leadership and management courses lasting at least four weeks each from recognised institutions. A certificate in computer applications is also required.

Applicants must fulfil the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, which covers leadership and integrity.

MNTRH said it is looking for candidates with strong leadership and people management skills, high integrity, good judgement, decision-making and analytical abilities and an understanding of public service procedures.

The notice also lists an ability to drive change, address complex problems, mobilise resources and demonstrate a genuine interest in mental healthcare among the desired competencies.

The successful candidate will receive a basic monthly salary ranging from Sh395,386 to Sh560,000, together with applicable allowances and benefits under the hospital's approved terms and conditions of service.

Applicants are required to submit a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of academic and professional certificates, a copy of their National Identity Card or passport and the names and contacts of three referees.

They must also provide clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority, Higher Education Loans Board, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Directorate of Criminal Investigations and Credit Reference Bureau.

Applications should be addressed to the Chairperson, Board of Directors, Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, Nairobi.

Candidates can hand-deliver their applications to the hospital's Administration Office or send them by email to [email protected].

The hospital said applications must be received on or before September 25, 2026, at 5 pm.

"Canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification," the hospital warned.
